Leeds Bligny Sunday 2018

Leeds, West Yorkshire

The 8th (Leeds Rifles) Battalion, The West Yorkshire Regiment was decorated with the French Croix De Guerre avec Palme en Bronze by the Commander of the French Fifth Army after it recaptured the front line at Bligny. Leeds Rifles, a volunteer force originally staffed by workers from businesses such as Tetley's Brewery, had fought back the more experienced and larger German defences that had put the French Army at risk on the River Marne near Reims. The battalion reported 14 dead, 96 wounded and 11 missing in battle.

Today’s 4th Battalion of The Yorkshire Regiment, British Army Reserve, will represent Yorkshire’s own County Regiment at the 2018 Bligny Sunday parade in Leeds.
